No apologies, I’m talking about video marketing again today. Inside my Rockstar Program June is the month of the VISIBLE FOUNDER and we are focusing in on using ourselves to market our brands, so this is a topic at the front of my head every day! Whether you are one of my Rockstars or not you are you’re very own USP, you can use yourself to promote your biz and video is THE BEST way to introduce yourself to the world. I’m going to show you today why you shouldn’t worry when video marketing goes wrong.
One of the biggest reasons founders I work with don’t use video is because they are scared and worried they will mess up. Do you feel the same?
Today I am going to share a truly embarrassing story, probably one of the worst things that has happened to me in my career. I’m talking total humiliation in front of hundreds! Messing up on the grandest scale ever! I am going to show you that at your worst moment, when you think you have totally blown it, when you think no one could ever buy products from a fool like you, the exact opposite can happen.
I am going to show you that nothing you can do, no mistake you can make could be bigger than mine. I am going to show you how being authentic and honest in the worst circumstances will win you fans and customers. I am going to leave you with the confidence to pick up your phone and do some video safe in the knowledge that however it goes people will still love it and love you. I’m going to show you why you shouldn’t worry when video marketing goes wrong.

Almost a year ago to the day I was speaking at Beauty Exchange. I sat down on the stage and looked out at the 200+ people in the audience and saw a sea of familiar faces and waving hands. I was so amazed to see such support it bought a tear to my eye. I felt so lucky and proud to be part of THE best indie community ever.
As I was revelling and celebrating our awesomeness in my head I was suddenly aware that it was time to introduce myself. I opened my mouth and said, “Hi there, my name is Rachel Whittaker and I am the founder of……………”
My head was empty. I had no words!
Seriously, me, no words!
I could not remember my company name. In front of all those people I was speechless. I was making a complete fool of myself. How the hell was I going to recover from this?
Well, I made a joke about it, and explained I was little overwhelmed and then got back on track and delivered the content that I was there to share.
All the time I was talking though I was so conscious about the impression I had created.
I bet this is how you feel about creating video content isn’t it? This is your biggest fear. Not knowing what to say and looking like a prize idiot.
So why I am telling you this story again? Why I am reliving the humiliation? I’m supposed to be encouraging you to do video, right?
Because of this.
“Your energy is contagious and your knowledge is inspiring. And I LOVE that you got a bit overwhelmed. It made me relate to you even more, we are all human not robots and I love your humility, the passion you exude overcame you temporarily and then you rallied back which to me is awesome. Real. Authentic. Impressive.”
This is a message I received on Instagram shortly after the event and mirrored a number of comments I received while I was there.
Video content does not need to be super professional. You don’t need to script it, edit it and add music and captions. The most important ingredient in video is authenticity and passion and you have that in spades. That’s why you shouldn’t worry when video marketing goes wrong.
Even when things go wrong or don’t go to plan, be yourself, roll with it, talk about how you’re feeling and your followers will relate to you even more.
Relax about video. Start playing with it. Insta Stories is a really great medium to start with. The most important thing is that you start doing it NOW. Don’t miss out on the incredible opportunities video provides.
Start this week. Right now. As soon as you finish this blog pick up your phone and start an Instagram Story. Take a picture of your ‘to do list’ for the week, video yourself with a face mask on, show yourself going to yoga or walking the dogs, talk about how you fit your work in around dropping the kids at school. Don’t overthink it, just do it and then do it again and as you keep doing it you will get better and better, your confidence will grow and so will your engagement, followers and sales.
