For the last few weeks I have been indulging in a real passion of mine, nailing down the top beauty trends to look out for in 2019. For me this is a real guilty pleasure. It’s an excuse for me to immerse myself deep in the amazing beauty world I love and that sometimes when things are busy I can just loose a little contact with. I read articles and blogs; I review surveys and reports and I listen to endless podcasts and watch hours of You Tube video. It’s an annual ritual I look forward to and I would highly recommend you build it into your New Year routine.
In this video I reveal my findings and share my top beauty trends to look out for in 2019. I’m also going to provide links to some of the awesome resources I have found over the last few weeks in case you would like to do some of your own research. I would love to hear what you think the top beauty trends to look out for in 2019 are, so please feel free to leave me a comment.
Let’s dive in! Watch the full video for extra insights or scroll down to read the blog.
Coming in as the TOP beauty trend to look out for in 2019 is ZERO WASTE. I’ve picked this one as the top trend because I believe it is possibly one of the most significant changes our industry has seen and will see for a long time and because it is very close to my heart personally.
In a recent report Mintel stated zero waste
“is not just a trend it’s a movement towards a ground breaking new archetype for the industry”
“if brands don’t change their approach now they will become insignificant.”
We all have a responsibility to do our sustainability bit and your consumers are becoming ever more passionate about how they go about doing theirs. They are changing their lifestyles and they are looking to buy from businesses that have sustainability, zero waste and ethical practises at their core.
Take this blog as a clarion call to look long and hard at your business and make the necessary changes to make you a consumer brand of the future. Zero waste is not simply about packaging though; it’s about the sustainability and transparancy of your whole supply chain. So dig deep and look at all the ways your business can make a difference.
What’s so interesting and exciting about zero waste is your consumers need help with its implementation. They know it’s important but at times are unsure how to actually make the changes in their lives. This means you can use your influence across all your marketing channels to educate and guide. You can share your passion, guide and educate your followers and in return win loyalty and increase profits at the same time as doing your bit to change the world. Now if that’s not the mission of every indie beauty entrepreneur I don’t know what is!
Watch out for more blogs on this topic from me in the near future. It’s a personal passion and I believe there are so many wonderful things you could and should be doing in your marketing to play your role in this worldwide movement. Coming in as my second top trend to look for out for in 2019 is PRODUCTS IN BAR FORM. So this really follows on from the zero waste movement. I think we can expect to see an increase in products without packaging like soap, shampoo and conditioner bars. Just in the last week or so we have seen a number of articles in the national press about the comeback of the ‘old fashioned’ soap bar and it seems even the luxury end of the market are putting their skin in the game with both Jo Malone and Chanel launching bars this year.
Number 3 in my top trends to look out for in 2019 is PERSONALISED BEAUTY.
I kind of see this trend developing in 3 different ways.
First up, I think there will be a continuing interest in DIY beauty. Wellness is still a key lifestyle trend and the ability to be creative and make your own beauty products interests many of your consumers. I would recommend sharing recipes and advice as part of your overall marketing strategy. By showcasing your expertise and knowledge in this way you will win the hearts, minds and purses of many.
I also believe there will be growing interest in powdered products like face masks, that consumers can mix with the ‘wet bit’ of choice, water, honey, yogurt, olive oil, depending on how their skin feels. Founders of ByBi, Dom and Elsie made the point in their recent podcast (episode 3) however, that for this trend to really develop brands need to help their consumers understand how to use powdered products. This opens up a wonderful vein of marketing content that you should be focusing on if you have powdered products in your range. Check out former Indie Beauty Rockstar, Casa Mencarelli’s Facebook Page for some ideas on how you can do this.
You can personalise your Mask choosing the liquid ingredients that activate the powder. In here preparing one Mask for dry skin and one for normal to oily skin.Mask 1 for dry skin:2 teaspoons of Green Clay & Lemon Mask, 2 teaspoons of organic almond milk, 2 drops of our Sea Buckthorn Serum.Mask 2 for normal / oily skin:2 teaspoons of Green Clay & Lemon Mask, 2 teaspoons of organic Pomegranate juice.Try the one that is best for you and let us know what you think!Enjoy!

It wouldn’t be a trend report without getting a little techy and the third way personalised beauty is going to make an impact this year is through 3D printable sheet face masks. Neutrogena announced just the other week that they are working on releasing a sheet mask that will be printed to fit your exact profile and contain actives to target needs on specific areas of your face. I know this one is blowing my mind too! It doesn’t seem possible, but beauty is a brave new world and we need to watch this space for sure.
Number 4 in my top beauty trends to look out for in 2019 is CBD SKINCARE. This certainly isn’t a new trend but I believe that it will continue to grow and develop throughout 2019. It’s another trend where educating consumers is key. The link between CBD and cannabis can be confusing and misleading and brands showcasing CBD need to be active on their social channels to explain how the ingredient works and what benefits it has. Check out Awake Organics to see how they are tackling this one.
I could go on and one. I have selected my favourite 4 trends that I believe are the top beauty trends to look out for in 2019. There are however loads more. Here’s a quick and dirty bullet list of some of others I came across.
- Growing out grey hair
- Natural lashes – using grapeseed oil and aloe vera
- Witch hazel
- Gloss lipstick and eye colours
- Standout lip colour
- Liquid exfoliator
- Lilac hair
- Polyhydroxy acids
- Retinol alternatives
- Microneedle patches
I would recommend grabbing a coffee, settling down and doing a little research yourself. May be you will find your niche is a growing trend. If this is your moment, grab it with both hands and ride that wave.
I have put plenty of links to some of the resources I used in my research but here are a few more you may find useful.
