In this Fierce Founders Series I feature real life beautypreneurs, the challenges they face growing their indie beauty brand and the solutions they find. They are motivating, inspiring and always contain key takeaways you can use to drive your business forward. This case study is all about Rebecca McKnight, Founder of Emotiv Aromatherapy and how she has used collaboration to grow her tribe, her engagement and her sales.

Background: In her own words Rebecca is a corporate escapee, aromatherapist, botanical formulator and well-being advocate. Her brand Emotiv Aromatherapy is all about sharing all this knowledge and her website is like an oasis of calm in this manic world. She shares de- stress techniques, sleep tricks, motivational boosters and DIY recipes.

Her gorgeous products are called Mood Shots and are “little pots of potent plant power for a personal sanctuary wherever you are.” The different scents provide bursts of calm, energy, mindfulness and relaxation.

Challenge: As a young brand Rebecca’s main challenge has been to get in front of as many people as possible, grow her tribe and get those early sales coming in. Never one to shy away from hard work she has been chipping away on Instagram and can often be seen at wellness events around London. By far the most rewarding strategy she has deployed however are collaborations and its these which have landed her here as one of my fierce founders.

Strategy: This is the part that makes her truly fierce! Whenever she attends any events she simply introduces herself to as many people as possible. I know, that takes guts and she’s got them in spades. She starts conversations, she asks questions. Two times it’s resulted in her being invited to feature in Instagram collaborations and on one occasion she was invited to retail her products on another brands website.

Her collaborations have aligned her with brands like Twelve Beauty, Elsa’s Organics, Nini Organics, We Are Wild Beauty and Absolutely Pure.

Results: Her Instagram collaborations have seen her followers double. Most importantly the new followers are genuine lovers of her lifestyle, what she stands for and her products. They are followers that have staying and buying power. The other incredible result is the engagement on her Insta Posts is increasing every day. And we all know how important engagement is when it comes to the dreaded algorithms! Her collaboration with Absolutely Pure, the brand whose website she is retailing on has resulted in sales! Here’s the moment the first sale was reported in Indie Beauty Rockstars the mentor group both Rebecca and Sophie, the Founder of Absolutely Pure are in.

Here’s what Rebecca has got to say about the power of collaborations.

“I have always loved helping others, mentoring and supporting. I guess I am just drawn to it. That’s who I am.

So for me, collaborating with and supporting other indie brands is just natural.

More than that though, from personal experience, the life of the solo beautypreneur can be tough. It can be lonely and there is just so much to know and do. You can end up spread so thinly across so many tasks that are not your strengths that you can  loose sight of your purpose. Your voice is small in a crowded market. It is hard to be noticed.

Now, if all of us are experiencing these identical issues, what better way to solve them that by collaborating.

It is what the spirit of Green Beauty should be all about. We all care about sustainability, helping others, spreading the message. So lets do this in our businesses, together. It doesn’t feel sustainable to run a business in isolation. The message won’t get spread alone. Helping others also means helping other solo business owners going through the same challenges.

The best thing? If we collaborate, we build an amazing supportive network of new friends who truly get what we are doing and going through. We share and pool our expertise and different strengths, so we don’t have to know every single thing. We also get heard because the voice of many is way more mighty than the voice of one. Together, we are powerful. Together we get new opportunities. Together is just better!

My recent collaboration with 17 other beauty brands was a wonderful event. Instigated by another small beauty brand, we have just done a giant green beauty giveaway together on instagram. I managed to meet and join this incredible group by just talking to other stand holders at the recent Love Natural Love You show.  I didn’t know any of them before.

It ran for a week and generated huge interest. For my own fledgling aromatherapy brand, it increased my followers by well over 50% in just 1 week, while post reach was up by thousands.

The really lovely thing is that many of the new people who visited my page have subsequently started to engage and are actively commenting and asking questions about the brand. The other great thing is that I have a new network of fabulous brand owners who have been there and done it.

And so the world goes round. We give, we share, we support, we receive. Share the love and pass it forward. Talk to every one. It really will make the world (and your business) a better place to be, and thats what we all want, right?”

Key Takeaways:

  • Networking is an essential tool to help you build your business
  • It’s tough growing a brand on your own search out like minded Founders who are happy to work together
  • Whatever situation you are in you have nothing to lose and everything to gain
  • Be brave, be fierce and start talking!
